Our Karen, Karen Wynn (Ustby) was born on December 13th, 1966 and left our world on August 22nd, 2019. She ran off in an instant, and was way too young. She ran up the path ahead of us and out of sight, when we weren’t looking. For those left behind, for now there is grief. And love, of course.
Many of us, those who knew and loved her, might first remember her as a child in Madison, Wisconsin. Karen was born and lived most of her life in Madison, Wisconsin. Karen, her mom and sister Jerri were the “Ustby Girls”. Karen was a giving soul, spirited, fun loving and free. Laughing, always laughing.
Karen’s husband was Doug. Her best friend, travel companion, confidant and soul mate. With him she shared a love so deep no words can describe it. Drop a stone down that well of love and you will not hear it land. Together they were like peanut butter and jam, cheese curds and beer, chips and dip … each with such great qualities but when together perfection.
Our Karen for whom family and friends meant everything. She was always there for us; everyone – loving, giving, the light of the room, and we knew when she arrived that all was right in our world. A spirit such as hers can’t be made still. The lover of games both competitive and cooperative whose laughter kept us laughing.
Karen would reach out for any hand that needed taking. She always made time to listen, provide counsel and love. Yet she is still, even now, the girl with the stunning aquamarine eyes, long beautiful tanned legs; playing with her friends. Still laughing.
Karen tried on many hats in her life, each one a different fit but suiting her right at the time. In her early years she worked in retail and was a bartender, and once her schooling was finished she was an occupational therapist, mobility assessment evaluator who fit people for wheelchairs, a massage therapist, and a hospital volunteer. Then Karen tried on her last hat and it fit perfectly … a realtor. Karen found her calling and within three short years was flourishing. And everyone around her was smiling at her success.
Karen Rae (Ustby) was born in Madison; the daughter of Roy (deceased) and Carol (deceased). She was the much treasured sister of Jerri (Dan); another daughter to Jill or as she called her Mum; the cherished sister-in-law of Linda and Christie (Tim); the much beloved aunt to Joe (Brianna), Jules and Liam; Brin (Sabrina) and Breagh (Ayad); Kate, Sarah, Emma and Reid; and great-aunt to Georgia; Myles and Tristan.
