Various hardships come with being a first-generation immigrant and college student. Fawny Arnyek found ways to overcome these obstacles through her ambition to go above and beyond, gaining the support necessary from the community.
She used her passion for bettering her education to connect with the community around her. It is these connections that formed her foundation toward success.“ It quickly became apparent to me how important it is to have a supportive community to support me in my educational pursuits,” Fawny said.
Fawny received the general studies Leo Wotitzky Scholarship in 2021. As a teacher, newspaper editor, state legislator, and attorney at law, Leo was well-rounded, especially in leadership. The scholarship was created in Leo’s honor by his friends, family, and former students, as he always is remembered as one of Florida’s finest citizens.
Arnyek will apply this scholarship toward a Computer Science/Business Administration degree with a focus on cybersecurity. “I struggled to find what I was passionate about until I stumbled upon a video about Sweetie: a 10-year-old child created by computer animation to bait online sexual predators. Unfortunately, Sweetie’s work, which found over 1,000 predators in 71 countries, was dismissed because it was labeled entrapment by the judicial system. At this time, I knew I had finally found what I wanted to dedicate my time to,” Fawny explained.
She intends to find ways to fight against online human trafficking, determined to push past the potential barriers that revolve around human trafficking solutions such as the varying laws in each country regarding child abuse. To further her education, Fawny has chosen the computer science track better to serve her community and society.
“This scholarship has instilled in me a newfound confidence that others, who have learned about me through my writing, have faith in me too,” she stated. Receiving this scholarship through the Charlotte Community foundation amplified her existing aspirations to go above and beyond in her studies and career. Fawny saw how much the foundation cares about students and how much they are willing to help. “I am so happy and excited to see how active the community is in supporting its students and creating even more opportunities for them to continue their education,” Fawny reinforced. Fawny cannot wait to take advantage of every educational opportunity and strive for more through her future studies.
