JENNIFER A. YOUNG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

HELPING OTHERS REACH THEIR LIFE GOALS
Growing up, Sara Drake never thought she would become a teacher. However, that changed in 2012 after she got a job as a substitute teacher in Charlotte County, Fla. That job sparked a passion for teaching and student learning, and it also motivated Sara Drake to work towards a degree in Educational Leadership.

Drake was recently able to complete her Master’s degree in Educational Leadership with financial assistance from the Jennifer A. Young Memorial Scholarship through the Charlotte Community Foundation.

The Jennifer A. Young Memorial Scholarship was established in memory and honor of Jennifer Young, dedicated teacher, department chair and president of the Worthington Education Association. She retired as an Assistant Principal at Worthington Kilbourne High School in 2002. She also was a leader in the OSU Graduate Principal Development Program.

What does receiving this scholarship mean to you?

“I have to say how grateful I am for the Charlotte County Community Foundation (CCF) and all that they do for our community. I found out about the CCF scholarship opportunity from a friend. It meant that I did not have to pick up a second job to pay for an advanced degree, allowing me more time at home with my daughter and more time to coach and support the students at my school. The scholarship was truly a great blessing to me.”

Now that she has completed her degree, Drake is looking forward to giving back to Charlotte County.

“I am looking forward to supporting students on a larger scale, as well as influencing teachers to lead in the same way that I have been led,” she said. “I have had many opportunities in the community to observe, collaborate with, and shadow many amazing teachers.  We are truly blessed to have exceptional teachers, administration, and support staff in this community.

“My aspirations at this time are to continue to educate myself and others on their important influence on students and families. A few years ago, I would have never expected to finish my Master’s Degree, and the Community Foundation helped me with this amazing opportunity.”
